Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is a tiny, spineless, button-shaped cactus, typically blue-green to gray-green, usually growing only 2–7 cm above ground and 4–12 cm in diameter. Known for its extremely slow growth and white-to-pink summer flowers, it is native to the Chihuahuan desert, often found in clusters.
Key Characteristics of Small Peyote Cactus:
- Appearance: Button-like, globular, or dome-shaped, with a soft texture. It is mostly, if not entirely, spineless, often featuring small tufts of hair instead of spines.
- Size: Generally 2–7 cm above ground and 4–12 cm across, though in the wild it stays very low to the ground.
- Color: Ranging from blue-green to grayish-green, sometimes appearing yellowish-green.
- Flowers & Fruit: Produces small, long-lasting pink-to-white flowers in the summer. The fruit is a small berry that ripens to a pink color the following year.
- Growth Habit: Extremely slow-growing (10–30 years to mature in the wild, 6–10 in cultivation).
- Native Habitat: Found in the Chihuahuan desert, particularly in Mexico and southern Texas, often under thorny scrub in limestone soil.
- Psychoactive Properties: Contains over 50 psychoactive alkaloids, with mescaline being the primary component, used for its hallucinogenic effects.
