About this Item

Curio ficoides (formerly Senecio ficoides), known as blue chalksticks, is a fast-growing, evergreen succulent shrub native to South Africa, reaching up to 1m high and 3m wide. It features striking, powdery blue-grey, fleshy leaves that are laterally flattened and erect. Ideal for dry gardens and pots, it requires full sun and well-draining soil.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: A spreading shrub with brittle branches that can become woody at the base.
  • Leaves: Succulent, erect, and blue-green with a waxy, powdery bloom (pruinose). They are notably flattened laterally, often creating a “knife-like” appearance with translucent lines on both sides.
  • Flowers: Small white to pale yellow, disc-shaped flower heads (no ray florets) appear on branching, terminal inflorescences.
  • Size: Typically grows 500–700 mm high, but can reach over 1 meter.
  • Cultivars: The ‘Mount Everest’ (or Skyscraper) cultivar is a popular upright, columnar form used for structural, vertical gardening, often reaching 3-4 feet in height.
