About this Item

Pilosocereus glaucescens, or Blue Torch Cactus, is a striking columnar cactus from Brazil known for its intense blue-green powdery skin, which becomes grey-green with age. It grows upright to 6m (rarely over 2m in containers) and features woolly, white-haired areoles, yellowish-brown spines, and nocturnal white flowers in summer.

Key Characteristics
  • Stems: Columnar, branched, 8-10 cm in diameter, with 8-10 rounded ribs. They have a striking glaucescent (powdery, waxy) coating.
  • Color: Young shoots are intense blue-green, maturing to dark grey-green.
  • Areoles & Wool: Areoles are close together, featuring abundant, long, delicate white woolly hair (tomentum) near the stem tips, often in a continuous line.
  • Spines: Fine, straight, yellowish, with 10-13 radiating (radial) spines and 5-7 stiffer central spines.
  • Flowers: Large, nocturnal white flowers, which can turn pinkish, emerging from a white, woolly pseudocephalium.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate, preferring bright full sun and well-drained soil.
Care and Cultivation
  • Light: Requires full sun to maintain its deep blue color.
  • Watering: Water sparingly; the soil must dry completely between waterings to prevent rot.
  • Temperature: It is sensitive to cold, needing protection from freezing, and thrives in warm, dry environments.
