The Golden Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus grusonii, often referred to as Kroenleinia grusonii), commonly known as the “mother-in-law’s cushion” or “golden ball,” is a popular, slow-growing, and Endangered barrel cactus native to east-central Mexico. It is highly prized for its large, spherical, and heavily ribbed body covered in bright, golden-yellow spines.
Key Physical Characteristics
- Shape: Young plants are small, globose, and tuberculate. As they age, they become more spherical, eventually growing into a barrel or cylinder shape that can reach 3 feet (1 meter) or more in height and width.
- Spines: They are famous for their dense, sharp, yellow spines which provide a striking contrast to the light green skin.
- Radial spines: Roughly 8–10, measuring over 3 cm (1.2 inches) in length.
- Central spines: 3–5, strong and straight or slightly curved, reaching up to 5 cm (2 inches) in length.
- Varieties: Rare white-spined (albispinus) or nearly spineless (subinermis) variants exist.
- Ribs: Mature plants typically feature 21 to 37 (or up to 35) pronounced vertical ribs.
- Flowers: Pale yellow, cup-shaped flowers (4–6 cm long) appear in summer at the crown (apex) of the plant. They only appear on mature specimens, typically after 20+ years.
- Fruit & Seeds: The fruit is yellow-green, oval, covered in white wool, and contains small, shiny brown seeds.
