Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as the Swiss cheese plant, is a popular, fast-growing tropical vine from Central America known for its large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that develop dramatic splits and holes (fenestrations) as they mature. It is a durable houseplant, thriving in bright, indirect light and requiring moderate watering, often climbing using aerial roots.

Key Characteristics
  • Leaves: Deep green and leathery, leaves can grow up to 90cm wide in the wild, typically developing holes (fenestrations) and deep lobes to allow wind/rain to pass through.
  • Growth Pattern: It is a hemiepiphyte climbing plant, utilizing thick, aerial roots to anchor onto trees. While it can grow up to 70 feet tall in the wild, it usually remains between 2–3 meters (6–10 feet) indoors.
  • Flowers/Fruit: Mature plants produce an inflorescence with a creamy-white spathe covering a yellowish spadix. The fruit, which is rare indoors, is a green, edible, pineapple-banana flavored berry when ripe.
  • Toxicity: All parts of the plant, except the fully ripe fruit, contain calcium oxalate crystals and are considered toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
