The Mistletoe Cactus (Rhipsalis baccifera), often referred to simply as Rhipsalis, is a unique, epiphytic, trailing cactus native to Central and South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa and Sri Lanka.
Description and Characteristics
- Appearance: Known for its long, thin, pencil-like, or “spaghetti-like” trailing stems, this cactus lacks traditional sharp spines. It has a soft, bushy, and drooping appearance.
- Growth Habit: It is an epiphyte, meaning in nature, it grows on other plants (like trees) rather than in soil.
- Flowers and Fruit: It produces small white or cream flowers, followed by small, white to pinkish berries that resemble mistletoe.
- Size: The trailing stems can grow very long, reaching up to 30 feet in ideal conditions.
Care and Cultivation
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered shade, rather than direct, harsh sunlight.
- Water: Likes more water than desert cacti, but the soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Environment: Thrives in warm, humid conditions, making it an excellent hanging houseplant.
- Soil: Requires well-aerated, fast-draining potting mix.
