About this Item

Mammillaria karwinskiana ‘Royal Cross’ is a small, typically solitary Mexican cactus that slowly forms clusters, growing under 4 inches tall. It features green, tubercled stems with white, woolly hairs in the axils and distinct white spines that redden to copper at the crown. It blooms with a ring of small, cream-colored flowers.

Key Characteristics:
  • Appearance: Globular to short-cylindrical green stems with spirally arranged tubercles.
  • Spines: White radial spines that turn reddish-copper at the top of the plant.
  • Wool: Distinct white hair/wool (tomentum) is found between tubercles at the apex.
  • Flowers: Small, funnel-shaped, cream-colored to white flowers form a crown in spring.
  • Growth: Generally stays under 4 inches in height and width, making it ideal for small pots.
Care Tips:
  • Light: Requires bright sunlight, ideally at least 3 hours of direct sun daily.
  • Water: Needs infrequent watering; allow soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent rot.
  • Soil: Requires very well-draining succulent/cactus soil, preferably with 70%–80% mineral grit like pumice or perlite.
  • Temperature: Not frost-hardy; should be brought indoors during freezing temperatures.
