About this Item

Mammillaria prolifera (Texas Nipple Cactus) is a small, clustering succulent subshrub that forms dense mats of cylindrical or globular, dark green stems up to 9 cm tall. It is known for having white, hair-like radial spines and stouter, yellow-to-reddish central spines, giving it a fluffy appearance. The plant produces small white/yellowish flowers and edible, bright red berries.

Key Characteristics and Appearance:
  • Stem Structure: Each stem is covered in small tubercles (cylindrical bumps) rather than ribs.
  • Spines: Each tubercle has numerous thin, white, hair-like spines and 4-12 stouter central spines. The axils (space between tubercles) are often filled with soft, white hairs.
  • Growth Habit: It clusters heavily from the base, often forming mounds up to 60 cm in diameter, though individual stems are only about 4.5 cm wide.
  • Flowers and Fruit: Flowers form a pink, yellow, or white halo around the top of the stem in spring. The fruits are elongated, scarlet berries that resemble small peppers or berries.
Cultivation and Care:
  • Light: Thrives in full sun or bright filtered light.
  • Water: Needs regular water in summer (while allowing the soil to dry out between waterings), but must be kept dry in winter to prevent root rot.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, typically a standard cactus mix.
  • Temperature: Suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9b to 11b.
