Gymnocalycium mihanovichii (Chin Cactus or Moon Cactus) is a small, slow-growing South American cactus, typically 2–4 inches wide, characterized by 8–14 prominent ribs and faint spines. Native to Paraguay, it prefers partial shade, featuring green-to-brownish tones in the wild, while its famous mutant “Moon Cactus” form features red, yellow, or pink hues.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Globose and slightly flattened, with a “chin-like” protrusion above each areole.
- Coloration: Wild forms are grayish-green, brownish, or purplish. Mutant cultivars (Ruby Ball, Hibotan) are bright red, pink, orange, or yellow.
