Gymnocalycium mihanovichii (Chin Cactus or Moon Cactus) is a small, slow-growing South American cactus, typically 2–4 inches wide, characterized by 8–14 prominent ribs and faint spines. Native to Paraguay, it prefers partial shade, featuring green-to-brownish tones in the wild, while its famous mutant “Moon Cactus” form features red, yellow, or pink hues.

Key Characteristics

  • Coloration: Wild forms are grayish-green, brownish, or purplish. Mutant cultivars (Ruby Ball, Hibotan) are bright red, pink, orange, or yellow.
  • Spines: Short, stiff, and sparse, usually dark brown or gray, often bending back against the stem.
  • Flowers: Funnel-shaped, pale pink, white, or yellowish-green, blooming in summer.
  • Size: Compact, typically measuring 1.5–2 inches tall and 2–5 inches wide.
