Clusia rosea (Autograph Tree) is a tropical evergreen shrub or tree, known for its large, stiff, glossy dark green leaves, commonly grown as a low-maintenance, air-purifying houseplant. It often grows as a hemi-epiphyte, beginning life on other trees before growing aerial roots. It thrives in bright indirect light.
Key Characteristics:
- Foliage: Leathery, paddle-shaped leaves, 8-20 cm long, which can hold water.
- “Autograph” Name: Its tough leaves can be written on with a stylus, leaving a lasting mark.
- Growth Habit: Outdoors, it can reach up to 15-30 meters (as a shrub or tree), but kept under 1 meter indoors. It grows aerial roots similar to a Strangler Fig, which can kill host plants.
- Flowers: Produces large, white to pink flowers (6-8 cm).
- Fruit: Small, green to black fruits that split open to reveal bright red seeds.
- Toxicity: The fruit is considered poisonous and inedible; foliage can cause stomach issues if ingested.
