About this Item

Ferocactus horridus (Blue Barrel Cactus) is a slow-growing, globose to cylindrical cactus recognized by its deeply ribbed, blue-green body and very strong, hooked brownish-red spines. It is highly prized for its “horrid” (meaning rough or bristly) appearance, with spines that can easily snag skin or clothing.

Key Characteristics:
  • Appearance: Initially globose, becoming columnar with age, reaching 2-4 feet in height. It has well-defined, sometimes slightly wavy ribs.
  • Spines: Features large, white, rounded areoles from which 4-8 very strong, rigid central spines grow, often hooked and brownish-gray, surrounded by smaller radial spines.
  • Flowers: Produces funnel-shaped flowers, typically bright yellow with red-veined ends, blooming in a ring at the apex of the stem.
  • Growth Habit: Generally solitary, rarely producing offsets.
Care Requirements:
  • Light: Thrives in full, direct sun but needs partial shade during peak summer to avoid sunburn.
  • Soil: Requires extremely well-draining soil, such as a mix with pumice, lava grit, or gravel.
  • Water: Needs moderate watering in spring/autumn, but prefers to be kept dry in summer and winter (low water needs).
  • Hardiness: Sensitive to excessive moisture and cold, preferring to stay dry when temperatures are low.
