About this Item

Cereus forbesii ‘Monstrose’ (often sold as “Ming Thing”) is a slow-growing, highly sculptural cactus with a unique, mutated, and irregular growth pattern, forming clumps of blue-green, knuckle-like shapes. It features small, woolly areoles and short black spines, typically reaching only 1–2 feet in height. It thrives in bright, direct light, is drought-tolerant, and is perfect for containers.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: This cultivar is a Monstrose variety of Cereus forbesii, meaning it is a mutant with an abnormal, contorted growth form that creates a “club-like” or “brain-like” look.
  • Color & Texture: Stems are a cool blue-green to powdery blue with a smooth, firm feel.
  • Spines & Areoles: Features small black or yellow-brown spines that often appear sparsely on top of its “knuckles”.
  • Size: Generally small, rarely exceeding 2–3 feet in height.
  • Blooms: While very rare, it can produce large, white, night-blooming flowers.
Care and Cultivation
  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
  • Watering: Requires a “soak and dry” schedule; only water when the soil is completely dry.
  • Soil: Requires extremely fast-draining potting mix, such as a dedicated succulent or cactus mix.
  • Temperature: It prefers warmer temperatures and should be protected from harsh, freezing winter weather.
  • Uses: Highly popular for containers, windowsills, and miniature succulent gardens.
