About this Item

Notocactus magnificus (also known as Parodia magnifica or Balloon Cactus) is a spherical to short-columnar cactus with striking bluish-green skin, deep ribs, and golden-yellow spines. Native to southern Brazil, it produces large, bright yellow flowers at its crown during summer. It grows best in bright light, well-draining soil, and is known for forming clusters of pups.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: Distinct glaucous blue-green, globular stem that becomes more cylindrical as it matures. It is characterized by 11-15 straight, sharp ribs.
  • Spines: Soft, thin, flexible spines that appear as yellowish, hair-like bristles along the ribs.
  • Flowers: Large, funnel-shaped, vibrant yellow flowers, typically blooming in summer to early autumn.
  • Size: Can grow to 7–15 centimeters tall and up to 45 centimeters broad in nature, but generally stays smaller in containers.
  • Habit: Grows in clusters (offsets) around the base, forming colonies.
Care and Cultivation
  • Light: Prefers strong, direct light (at least 6 hours of sun) to maintain its blue color and tight spine structure.
  • Watering: Low to moderate. Water every 2-3 weeks in summer, and very rarely (or not at all) in winter. It needs to be dry during winter to prevent rot.
  • Soil: Requires a highly permeable, porous, and slightly acidic mix (pH 4-6).
  • Temperature: Highly sensitive to severe frost. It thrives in warm temperatures but should be protected below 5°C.
  • Uses: Excellent for container gardening and sunny patios.
