About this Item

Mammillaria is a large genus of small, usually solitary or clumping, globose to cylindrical cacti, often called pincushion, fishhook, or nipple cacti. They are defined by spirally arranged tubercles (nipples) rather than ribs, with flowers forming a crown around the top, and are native mostly to Mexico.

Key Characteristics
  • Structure: They are covered in tubercles (nipples) with spines at the apex and bare axils between them, which produce flowers.
  • Flowers & Fruit: Small funnel-shaped flowers, often in shades of white, yellow, pink, or red, form a ring around the apex. Fruits are usually club-shaped, juicy, and berry-like, typically red, but sometimes white or green.
  • Spines: Spines vary widely, including straight, hooked (fishhook), or fine, hair-like, and feathery, as seen in M. plumosa.
  • Size: Most species stay under 30 cm (12 inches) in height, making them popular houseplants.
Popular Species
  • Mammillaria hahniana (Old Lady Cactus): Covered in white hairs and white spines, growing to about 10 inches tall.
  • Mammillaria spinosissima (Spiny Pincushion): Cylindrical with intense, colorful spines and a ring of pink flowers.
  • Mammillaria bocasana (Powder Puff Cactus): Dense white hairs and red, hooked spines
