About this Item

Echinopsis calochlora is a small, clump-forming, globular cactus native to Bolivia and Brazil, known for its dark green body, notched ribs, and needle-like, yellow-to-grey spines. It blooms at night with large, fragrant, white, funnel-shaped flowers, reaching 6–10 cm in height. It prefers bright light, fast-draining soil, and low water.

Key Characteristics and Description
  • Body: Spherical to short, cylindrical stems, which are a deep, bright green.
  • Ribs and Spines: Features 15-18 sharp-edged, notched ribs. Areoles are grey, bearing needle-like spines that can be yellow to brown, often darker at the base.
  • Flowers: The cactus is known for producing large, white, nocturnal flowers that can last for only a day.
  • Size: Generally grows to a height of 6–10 cm and a diameter of 7–9 cm.
  • Habit: It forms clusters or clumps of stems over time.
Care and Cultivation
  • Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight, but appreciates some protection from, or dappled light during, the intense afternoon sun.
  • Watering: Requires moderate watering during the growing season (summer) but should be kept almost dry in winter.
  • Soil: Requires well-drained, porous, and sandy soil to prevent root rot.
  • Hardiness: Not frost-hardy; best grown in temperatures above 5°C.
  • Propagation: Primarily propagated through offsets (pups) that form around the base of the mother plant.
