Chamaecereus silvestrii (commonly known as the Peanut Cactus or Echinopsis chamaecereus) is a highly suitable trailing cactus for hanging baskets, planters, or elevated pots, often winning awards for its ornamental value. Its unique, fleshy, finger-like stems grow in thick clusters that eventually Cascade over the sides of containers, creating a “weeping” or hanging appearance.
Physical Description & Hanging Characteristics
Stems: The stems are light green, segmented, and cylindrical, roughly 1.2 cm in diameter and up to 15 cm long, resembling peanuts. As they grow in a hanging basket, they grow vertically at first, then become prostrate or trailing as they age.
Appearance: They are densely covered with 10-15 soft, white, bristle-like spines, which are not sharp, making them easy to handle. As the stems age, they often turn brown or woody, particularly at the base.
Growth Habit: It spreads rapidly, forming dense, crowded mat-like structures that can cover a 15cm (6-inch) basket in two years.
Flowers: In late spring and early summer, the plant produces abundant, vibrant orange-red (or scarlet) funnel-shaped flowers that are about 2.5–5 cm in diameter.
Care and Cultivation in Hanging Baskets
Light: Prefers full sun for optimal flowering, but in very hot climates, it appreciates some afternoon shade to prevent scorching.
Watering: Requires moderate watering in the summer, with the potting mix allowed to dry out completely between waterings. It needs a completely dry, cool, and quiet rest period during the winter to bloom effectively the following spring.
Soil: Requires a very well-draining potting medium, such as a specialized cactus mix or sandy soil.
Propagation: The plant readily produces small, detachable “peanuts” or stems, which can be easily separated and laid on top of the soil, where they will quickly root.
