About this Item

The Variegated Cereus (often Cereus peruvianus ‘Monstruosus’ or Acanthocereus tetragonus ‘Fairy Castle’) is a rare, slow-growing succulent featuring striking marble-like patterns of creamy-yellow and deep green due to lack of chlorophyll in certain patches. It is prized for its unique, sculptural appearance with ribs that break down into chaotic, knobby mounds, resembling a variegated, living statue.

Key Characteristics & Description:
  • Appearance: This cactus displays unpredictable variegation, where cream-to-gold colors mix with green, making each specimen unique.
  • Shape: It is a columnar or monstrose form (often “Fairy Castle”) featuring multiple, small, dense, branching stems that resemble small turrets or towers.
  • Variegation Mechanism: It is a genetic mutation that causes a lack of chlorophyll, often resulting in slower growth compared to its all-green counterparts.
  • Flowers: It produces large, rare, white or light-colored flowers that bloom at night.

Care Instructions:
  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Intense, direct sun can cause sunburn on the delicate variegated patches.
  • Watering: Requires minimal watering, only when the soil is completely dry to prevent rot.
  • Soil & Soil Mix: Plant in well-draining succulent or cactus mix, often with added sand or perlite.
  • Environment: Perfect for indoor, well-lit spaces or as a unique specimen in xeriscaping, growing roughly 15-20 cm indoors.
